How SpoilerGate works

Friends share one YouTube video, watch on their own time, and leave takes at exact moments. Those takes stay locked until each person reaches that second.

  1. Start a room

    Paste a YouTube link. SpoilerGate pulls the video title, duration, and chapters when available, then gives you an invite code like gate-a7x9b2. Sign in with Google or join as a guest. Rooms are built for a small circle, not a livestream audience.

  2. Two ways to watch

    Your place in the video is what unlocks takes, so SpoilerGate needs a clear clock in every setup.

    In the browser

    Watch in the embedded player. Time tracks automatically as you go. Cast to a TV if you want the living room screen while the page stays the controller.

    TV companion

    Playing in a native TV app instead? Use companion mode on your phone: a running clock, play/pause, nudge buttons, and a scrubber so your progress stays in sync even when YouTube is not embedded.

  3. Drop takes at a timestamp

    When something lands, pin a take to that second. Friends see that you commented and when. You always see your own takes in full, even if you scrubbed back. Replies stay with the take and unlock with it.

  4. The spoiler shield

    Takes ahead of you stay locked. You can see who left one and at what time, but the words stay hidden until your watch progress catches up to that moment. Once you finish the video, everything unlocks.

    The twist with the archive footage still hits every time.

    Jumping forward more than five minutes opens a confirmation so you do not skip into spoilers by accident. You can still scrub; the app just asks first.

  5. Reactions when you cross a take

    As playback passes a friend's unlocked take, a short toast floats up with their words. On unlocked takes you can react with a single tap: 馃拃 馃敟 馃憦 馃く 馃憖. You cannot react to your own.

  6. The afterparty

    When you finish, the scoreboard opens: the hottest 60-second window in the video, friend badges (first finisher, most takes, top take), and a summary card you can paste into WhatsApp, Signal, or iMessage.
